Christmas in Bangladesh is referred to as “Borodin”, meaning “the big day”, and is celebrated in unique ways. Major cities and shopping malls or hotels might keep Christmas in a Western style, but otherwise, Christmas traditions are a bit different in Bangladesh.
First of all, many attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Second, many who live in the cities travel to rural areas to spend Borodin with their parents and extended family.
Third, many houses and buildings are decorated with strings of triangular paper flags called “nishan” rather than with lights. And fourth, Christmas dinners are often eaten at church in rural areas, right after the service.
