Bangabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is considered the father of modern Bangladesh. His birthday is celebrated each year as an opportunity to reflect on the life and impact of Sheikh Mujib.

On this public holiday, different socio-political and cultural organisations organise discussions, cultural functions and other programmes designed to recognise the Sheikh. The national and party flags are hoisted at 6:30 AM and wreathes are placed at the Father of the Nation’s portrait at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the Dhanmondi area at 7 AM. Wreaths are also placed later in the day by other government leaders. Wreaths are laid at 10 AM at the Mausoleum Complex in Tungipara where he is laid to rest.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a principal organiser of the East Pakistan Muslim Students League in 1948. He was elected as one of the joint secretaries of the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League while serving a jail term. He became general secretary of the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League in 1953 until he became president of the party in 1966.
During the 1960s, he grew to political eminence. He was jailed after presenting his Six-Point Programme that was designed to establish independence for East Pakistan (now “Bangladesh”). He was released in 1969. In 1970, he was elected to the Pakistan National Assembly and took an oath to use the Six-Point Programme as the framework for the Constitution for East Pakistan.
